If your home was built before 1980 there is a small chance your ceiling texture and or drywall mudded areas contains asbestos.
Though it is rare, it is not something you should take lightly. The alleged effects of contact with this material is possible disease such as lung cancer. My old boss who textured ceilings for 30 plus years claims to have come in contact with this material many times and is still very healthy to this day. Not a risk I would take or subject anyone to.
The reason I am making this post is because I am currently (nov 5, 2019) dealing with a very frustrated homeowner here in Calgary Alberta Canada who decided she wanted to get rid of her popcorn ceiling texture that was installed before 1979 and after mailing a small sample to an asbestos testing company the results came back positive for containing asbestos. She then contacted local asbestos abatement companies and was quoted an high price of around $14,000 to remove and clean up a little over 2000 sq ft of ceiling texture.
She contacted me because I talk about skimming a layer of mud over an oil painted popcorn ceiling as an option on my website when the texture cannot be easily removed. I refused because the way I apply mud is with a spray machine with high psi air pressure and it would surely disrupt the texture. There may be companies who have no problem skimming mud over ceiling texture that include asbestos, and once this process is done I would be comfortable to apply my ceiling texture over it, but I think an abatement company removing it in a contained environment and disposing of it properly is the best choice.
There really should be a government program or insurance coverage that would cover the cost of removing this stuff but none that I know of. Please let me know if you discover a source that could help with the high cost of asbestos abatement.
